Business directories have evolved from the old school business directories, into online data bases, which are either built centrally by a company, or are built via a network, where individuals log company details, in order to be sure that their company can be compared with the best providers in a market place.

Company database search providers are generally sector specific; there are very few company databases that are able to cover all sectors and all products.

A company database will by definition be structured, so that someone searching can slice and dice the data, in order to find the firm, and the service that is needed.

Search engines do not provide a database as such: search engines though will use their "spiders" to crawl over the web, extracting information from company websites and pulling results from company databases that are published to the internet.
