IP Telephony is digital telephony, otherwise known as Voice over Internet Protocol or VOIP.    

Legacy telephone systems run off a physical PABX (private automatic branch exchange). A PABX is an analogue system, where the voice is transmitted in analogue format sound waves over copper wires on a PSTN / Public Switched Telephone Network.    VOIP or IP Telephony runs off virtual PABXs either hosted on a server, or in the cloud, and the voice is transmitted in a digital format over fibre or ethernet.

Cloud Telephony is the term for cloud provisioned telecoms services, replacing the physical servers and call systems (PABXs) that used to be in company offices.

A provider of high speed internet services delivered via light in glass fibre cables, or via electrical pulses in ethernet cables - using multiple strands of copper, or even a single copper cable.

Ethernet cables, using electrical pulses to transmit data, used to be just for the local area network or LAN, but the technology has advanced, with CAT 5e, CAT 6, and CAT 7 cable technology - and now the broadband can be delivered via an ethernet cable.

The other option is glass fibre, which delivers broadband capacity via s light pulses to transmit information.

Ethernet cables require a protective shield, both to prevent electrical interference, and signal leakage.

Fibre cables are more secure, and are also appropriate, as they do not use electrical pulses, in locations with high voltage equipment, or where explosive fumes may be present.
